Baby Shower Games: When Will the Water Break?

As a baby shower is held in anticipation of the arrival of a new baby there are many baby shower games based around the question ‘When will the water break?’, based on the premise that when the mother-to-be’s water breaks then the baby will shortly follow.

This baby shower game “When will the water break?” is a sweepstake style game. Everyone pays a small amount of money to the hostess and picks a date on which they think the mother-to be’s water will break. The hostess uses this collective fund to buy a prize for the person who guesses the date correctly; the finale of this game happens after the baby shower.

It is the anticipation of the win, and the disappointment as dates pass, that makes this game a baby shower must.
There are, though, many baby shower games based on the action itself of the mother’s water breaking, and these are often hilarious, and messy!

The following baby shower game should preferably be played outside due to the mess involved. The guests at the party divide in to pairs, and each pair is given a balloon filled with water. One of the pair starts with the balloon between their knees and walks (or attempts to run) a distance to their partner and then their partner has to walk, or run, back to the starting point; the idea is that they have to do this in the quickest time possible without the balloon between their knees bursting. However, this is such a difficult task it is more a question of when will the water break?

This means laughter, and several people becoming quite wet, will undoubtedly follow. The couple who completes their relay in the quickest time wins. If no-one manages to finish the race the winner is the couple whose balloon breaks last.

Another baby shower game called ‘when will the water break?’ involves a little planning for the hostess prior to the baby shower, but is definitely worth it. Before the party the hostess fills an ice cube tray with water and in each ice cube compartment places a small sweet which represents a baby. At the baby shower each guest is given one ice cube in a glass and the winner is the first to free their ‘baby’ from the ice cube, effectively ‘breaking their water’.

Any baby shower game based on the question ‘When will the water break?’ is not only extremely appropriate for the occasion, but also involves a high level of guest participation; which makes them ideal to use as ‘ice-breaker’ style games.

When creating a list of baby shower games, a game that asks ‘When will the water break?’ is an absolute must; it not only creates a lot of fun for all participating, but will also give the mum-to-be a good laugh, which is the main aim for any baby shower.
