Baby Shower Games that Dad Plays Too!

Though the tradition of a baby shower has been around for over a hundred years, recent cultural changes now bring Dad into the picture more.  One such trend is the couples’ shower.  This takes the baby shower, games and all, and adapts it to include Dad and his fellow men, as well.

The ‘ladies only’ style is replaced with something to suit both parents.  Couples showers really play off the dynamics of the Mom and Dad-to-be and the inherently different points of view.  The result, if planned right, is a totally hilarious and even sentimental party.

To make sure you keep the men interested, start with games that cater to the male psyche.  Raid someone’s toolbox and gather a few basic tools; a pair of pliers, wood clamps, screwdrivers, etc.  Have each guest, men and women; suggest how that tool could be used in the care of the baby.

Another fun game can be “Daddy Clothes, Mommy Clothes; this is a plan-ahead game for your guests.  Have each couple bring some ‘practical fashions’ that might be appropriate for the new Mom and Dad.  Maybe even have them model some of their attire.

For some practical skills, buy some pudding cups, enough for each guest.  Race to see which couple can feed each other the pudding the fastest, with minimal spills.  Be sure to have bibs (and cameras!)  For a twist on the eating race, have a bottle sucking race.  Fill 6 ounce bottles with fruit juice and race to see which man can drink it down the fastest.  Make sure Mommy ‘burps’ them afterward.

If you’re into shocking your guests (and really freaking out the Dads), Smelly Diapers is the perfect shower game.  Tell the guests they’ll have a chance to test their sense of smell.  Then hold up a diaper.  Have several diapers with different ‘scents’ in them.  Examples would be baby lotion, baby powder, different baby foods, spices and maybe even some liniment.

If sentimental is your game, create the perfect baby.  Go around the room and have each couple complete the following statement; “The perfect baby will have his (blank) and her (blank).

Add some nostalgia by playing TV Moms and Dads or TV Kids.  Team men against the women.  Name a TV Mom or Dad and see if the other side can name the TV show. Or, play it in reverse. Name the show and see4 if the other side can name the TV Mom and Dad.  The same strategy applies to the TV kid’s game, except the team has to name the famous TV Kid or the show they starred in.

If music is more the couple’s thing, have a round of ‘Baby Songs’. See who can list the most songs with the words ‘baby’ in it.  This could be done individually, couples teams, or men versus women.  It depends on how competitive and crazy you want to make it.

Choose a baby shower game that gets everyone involved early and you may find that the Dads has as much fun as the Moms.
